Zhang Ke received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the National Taiwan University. He is now an assistant research fellow at the Institute of Sociology, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, where he enjoys teaching contemporary sociological theory and writing about comparison of contemporary European sociological theorists.

His doctoral dissertation was on the formation of the relationship between contemporary Chinese intellectuals and the state (the CCP) from the perspective of historical sociology;he has also written on, and researched, cross-border migration and ethnic identity, especially those on both sides of the Mainland-Taiwan Strait,and migrants in Shanghai and their experience of urban modernity. He is currently conducting a study on group of reverse migration from developed regions to mainland China, Taiwanese in Shanghai as the case. He enjoyed it so much that he is seriously considering enriching migration theory and theory of identity through this research, while engaging in a dialogue with the culture sociology.
